Something Fishy on RTE Television
Joint winners of “Something Fishy” national prize
Joint winners of the “Something Fishy” national prize, St. Josephs National School Sligo and St. Josephs National School Terenure were in high sprits as they waited at the Central Fisheries Board swords to be presented with their well deserved prizes by Dublin footballer Mark Vaughan.

Both schools were presented with a microscope and a cheque and each pupil was also given a goodie bag which was packed full with presents. Little Becky and The Koolpops also donated CDs for each school to raffle off. The Fisheries Boards staff, teachers and the staff from the Educational Centres were overwhelmed by the sheer delight and happiness shown on the children’s faces which really made all involved feel that the hard work they put into the project was worth while.

John O’ Connor CEO of the Central Fisheries Board thanked all those for attending the presentations and congratulated the children and Fisheries Officers involved for all their hard work and commitment to the project. Seamus Cannon the Director of Blackrock Education Centre said “I was amazed and delighted to see such a high standard of entries to the “Something Fishy” project. The standard was so high we just could not pick a clear winner after hours of judging”. Seamus went on to say that the project has incorporated a number of key areas in the curriculum including English, Science, Art and History. Seamus and John both expressed their delight that the project is running again for the 2007- 2008 school year and hope the quality and standard of entries for next year will be just as high.
The Central and Regional Boards and The Education Centre would like to thank all those who helped make the “Something Fishy” project such a success.

The Central Fisheries Board (CFB) is a statutory body operating under the aegis of the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources and was established under the Fisheries Act 1980.
Its principal functions are to advise the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources on policy relating to the conservation, protection, management, development and improvement of inland fisheries and sea angling, to co-ordinate and provide specialist and support services to the Regional Fisheries Boards and to advise the Minister on the performance by the Regional Fisheries Boards of their functions.
“Something Fishy” is aimed at fifth and sixth classes at primary level and comprises of 9 doubled sided activity cards for pupils to explore different aspects of fish life for example, water, fish, the life cycle of salmon, fish stocks, angling, conservation of rivers and lakes and fish as part of the food chain.
Each school that tool part in the program was asked to produce a class project based on the lessons in the pack. The “Something Fishy” packs are available in both English and Irish. The packs are supported by an interactive website: www.somethingfishy.ie.
