River Nore

Angling guide Jim Browne gave me a short report of salmon fishing from the River Nore.

Keith Wenam caught and released a 16 lbs.+ fish on the fly just up stream from Inistioge.  A second springer was caught in the Thomastown waters which was a fish of about 8 lbs caught by Tom Moylan.

I got a report from Edward o Connor from the Kilkenny Anglers, that about 30 kelts were caught and all returned safely on the opening day.

Ian Forde fishing the Mount Juliet water on the opening a very brief encounter less than 30 sec. but the other one was lost at the net, Ian put it at 10 or 12 lbs.

I have not wet a line yet (scoring brownee points) but hope get out soon.

FOR WEEKENDED SUNDAY THE 22ND  OF MARCH 2009

KILLARNEY LAKES including LOUGH LEANE

Two salmon caught on the Lakes averaging 8.5 lbs. in weight.

LAUNE ANGLERS WATERS AND BEAT 3

(REPORT OF BILLY DOWNES, CLUB SECRETARY): Very little fishing effort.  No news of Fish from Laune Anglers waters.  Water level now very low for Spring time rain needed to tempt a few salmon to run the system.

Well known member, Dan Joy caught the first salmon of the year of the Laune Anglers waters on 02 March.  He caught the “bar of silver” on the fly at Coffey’s Flat.

RIVER BANDON

No report of any salmon catches.  Brown trout fishing is slow.

Lough Currane

Vincent Appleby reports on the fishing on the LOUGH CURRANE system.

22/3/09 Our Manger Mr John Murphy and of www.loughcurrane.com reported to me that there were two salmon caught on the troll, one by Mr Terence Wharton Jnr. and his weighed in at 10 lbs. and a Cork angler fishing by himself. Bright sunshine through out the day, Wind NW then veered NNW late this afternoon and by 5.45 pm the Lake was flat calm, air temperature 11.5˚C.

21/3/09 Well there may well have been action yesterday, but my noble salmon left all the action to the Irish rugby team who were playing at the millennium stadium in Cardiff and won the Grand slam for the first time since 1948 so congratulations to them, and I can tell you there were quite a few liquid libations consumed so it wouldn’t surprise me if there is a lack of boats on Lough Currane tomorrow? Wind NNE light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover, max air temperature 11.5˚C.

20/3/09 Well it may have been bright and sunny and a strong SE wind blowing and very little chance of a Salmon but you try and tell that to Mr Walter Rushe of Switzerland who caught a lightening fresh 10 lbs. salmon on the troll on the North side with his Gillie Mr Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com and I would like to quote Frank, I don’t know what you Gillies are complaining about, its just my third day out on the Lake and my client catches a fine Salmon, all I can say is, you must have the wrong lures. Wind SE fresh to strong this morning and light to calm this afternoon, max air temperature 16.6˚C.

19/3/09 Another bright sunny day and very little action and what would you expect with real bright conditions all I can say is thank God we anglers always have a good excuse. Wind SE light to fresh, max air temperature 17.7˚C.

18/3/09 the same today as yesterday, in all departments. Air temperature 18.9˚C.

17/3/09 It may have been St Patrick’s day but I can tell you that we anglers had nothing to celebrate in the Salmon department. Bright sunshine all day, wind SE fresh to strong. Max air temperature 16.8˚C.

16/3/09 There was a nice southerly wind blowing across the lake, plus there was good cloud cover, air temperature 11.3˚C, but alas we Anglers drew a blank but it was a different story at Waterville’s St. Finian’s Parish Church which was celebrating 150 years, and the reason I mention this is because Mr Michael O’Sullivan representing the Waterville Anglers presented a fly rod at the altar to the Bishop of Kerry the very Rev Bill Murphy.

That’s all the news from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery. No Spin No Fly’s just Facts.

LOUGH SHEELIN

There's not much to report this week from Sheelin. It has been cold enough on the lake of late. K O'Keefe had one fish of 1.75 lbs. Michael Kelly had two fish of 1.5 lbs each, all released. An angler from Northern Ireland caught and released 4 trout averaging about 2 lbs. Weather has got colder and windier which could hamper angling over the coming days.

Meanwhile catch up on angling news from the L.S.T.P.A. from their website at: http://www.loughsheelinanglers.ie/

LOUGH O'FLYNN & UPPER RIVER SUCK

It was a lovely week weather-wise with pleasant conditions for fishing on O'Flynn. Fishing results were mixed, lively at times but also patchy at times also. The best report was from Matt Foley and Bernard Mannion. They had 7 trout between them last Saturday, best 2.25 lbs. on golden dabblers. Some anglers were shore fishing which has become popular over the past year. The best shoreline is on the eastern side of the lake.  This area has suitable under foot conditions allowing for safe and comfortable fishing. Recent breezy weather has hampered fishing especially last Monday. Weather permitting O'Flynn is worth trying over the coming weeks.

LOUGH ENNELL

Anglers reported limited success on Ennell. A few fish are being caught, mainly on buzzers. No sign of any Duckfly hatches yet.  Dublin angler Norman Greene fished Ennell recently from the float tube out of Whitebridge bay.  He reported one other boat visible on the lake in the area, out trolling.  The only trout seen were the odd fish rising sporadically (after dark) to small black chironomids which accumulated into small numbers as a flat calm conditions came on at sunset.

LOUGH OWEL

Trout fishing has been good on Owel over the past two weeks. Robbie Minnock has had 35 trout since the start of the season, best 3.5 lbs. Joe Mc Carty had 2 fish for 3 lbs., all released.  Buzzer patterns are working well. Weather is much colder now which could hamper fishing over the coming days.

ATHLONE ANGLERS ASSOCIATION NEWS

ANTHONY LANDS BIG ONE TO WIN THE QUINNSWORTH CUP: What a weekend for sport we had with the rugby team finally clinching the Grand Slam after sixty one years of trying and Bernard Dunne becoming World Champion in one of the best boxing matches ever seen on these shores, not forgetting Athlone Town’s great draw against Limerick ensuring an unbeaten three match start to this year’s First Division, Manchester United losing again which has blown the Premiership wide open and all this topped off with a great days fishing on Sunday when Anthony Moran landed the big one to win the Quinnsworth Cup.

As usual, at this time of the year, the winds were blowing from the west which made for a cold day on the lake but that didn’t deter the twenty five boats full of anglers who turned on the shoreline eager to get going. Everybody was hoping for as good a day’s fishing as we had the previous week and while some were not disappointed there were still quite a number of boats that blanked on the day.

This was the first competition this year for which the weigh in and presentation of prizes took place on the shoreline at the compound and with the scales down at 6 pm Captain of the Day Sean Kelly was kept busy weighing the fish and working out the order of the winners. Anthony Moran easily claimed first prize for his trout which was 14 ounces heavier than that of Eamon Conway and Ray Dowling who claimed second prize. Third place went to Patsy McCallan whose trout weighed in fifteen ounces lighter and fourth place went to Bernard Kelly for his trout which was only three ounces further behind. The fifth and final spot went to Leo and Robert Joyce for their trout which was only one ounce lighter.

Finally our thanks to Sean Kelly who was our Captain of The Day and his young assistant Connor Hannon for their hard work.

THE ANGLER REST CUP RETURNS HOME! The competition for the Angler’s Rest Cup will take place next Sunday starting from Gallagher’s Boat Shed at 10.30 am and finishing with lines up at 5.30 pm. Captain of The Day will be Richie Fallon and catch and release will be facilitated. The weigh in and presentation of prizes will take place in The Snug with the scales down at 8.30 pm sharp. For those of you that don’t know The Snug is the old Anglers Rest and it is great to see this competition returning to its spiritual home thanks to two local Kiltoom men and new owners Paul Brennan and Justin Naughton. They took over last year and have completely renovated the premises but have maintained its charm with the wooden floors and brick walls reminding us of the old days. They have added on a fantastic beer garden and BBQ area where, along with Bar Manager Clayton Good, they can cater for parties of any size and with live music on Thursday and Sunday nights and all sporting events shown on the big screen it has fast become a destination of choice in Athlone’s left bank area.

FOR YOUR DIARY: The following is the schedule of competitions that it is proposed to hold over the next few weeks Please note this list may change due to unforeseen circumstances, however the details of each competition will be published in the local newspaper, on the www.athlone.ie  website and sent out to members by text message in the week prior to each competition.  On the 29th March, the Anglers Rest Cup, trout Lough Ree and the 5th April, the Fallon Memorial Cup, trout Lough Ree

25th March 2009

Galway Weir

The water levels have dropped away to just 2 gates open on the weir, and this has resulted in a big improvement in the fishing. Last year the first salmon wasn’t caught until April, but this year there are 14 salmon already landed. Over the St. Patricks holiday weekend there were 3 fish landed, with Denis Quill taking a 7.5 lbs fish on fly, and David Lenihan landing his second of the season, a 7-pounder, also on fly. Declan Brigs from Dublin tried spinning and landed a fine 12 lbs. fish. Since then, the fishing has continued to provide good sport, with Brian Howard taking a 9 lbs. fish on fly, while John McEvoy landed a 10-pounder while spinning. Flyfishing has been very good over the last few days, with fresh springers for Stephen Cullinane from Galway (10 lbs), local man Sean O’Toole (10 lbs.), Dublin angler Lorcan Buckley (11 lbs.), and Eddie Corry from Limerick, who landed 2 fish of 10.5 and 9 lbs. Simon Lenihan also had a fish of 6 lbs spinning.

Heavy rain is forecast later this week, which may bring water levels up again, but it is encouraging to see such good fishing so early in the season, and hopefully another good spring run is in store.

Western Lakes

Lough Mask fished fairly well over the last week, with good duckfly hatches present. Duckfly patterns were most successful, particularly in the shallows around the islands, although the noted buzzer nymph locations are not fishing as well this year as previously.

Cushlough resident Tom Foley bagged a fine trout weighing 2lbs just off Long Island on Saturday just before heading in for the Grand Slam rugby match. Kevin Sheridan from Kilmaine had 2 nice trout while fishing one day over the weekend. Maurice Devane from Cavan Town staying in Ballinrobe for the weekend caught and released 6 fish over 2 days fly fishing using size 12 various duck fly patterns. Daragh O'Connor and son from Sligo had 2 trout trolling around the Tourmakeady shoreline on Sunday. A lot of fish were seen around Cahir Bay and Ballahalla Bay but seem hard to catch.

The lake is still quite low for the time of year so anglers are requested to take care on the lake, although heavy rain is promised midweek which should bring the lake up to usual spring levels.

Over on Corrib, the fishing was relatively quiet, with duckfly hatches just beginning and fish just starting to move to flies at the surface. Peter Walsh had 2 trout on wetfly of 1.5 and 1.75 lbs. Peter Curran landed 5 trout on the troll, all between 1.5 and 2 lbs.  Paddy Gargan, Moycullen landed a couple of trout on duckly patterns up to 2 lbs.

Regulations

Anglers are reminded that this year new byelaws are now in place on the western lakes and all tributaries.

A 4 fish bag limit now applies, as well as a 13-inch size limit. It is also prohibited to take more than one fish over 10 lbs. weight.

There are also restrictions on the numbers of rods that can be used by individual anglers.  Full details of the byelaws are available at www.wrfb.ie

River Moy

The spring salmon have started to run in to the River Moy in earnest and are now being caught by anglers. Water levels have been ideal for angling on most of the river with some fisheries reporting perfect fly fishing conditions. Very little rain over the past number of weeks has meant that the Moy has had unseasonably low water levels.

As is the norm each year, the Ballina Salmon Anglers Fishery is the first stretch of the river to start producing salmon. Pappy Marshal, besides catching the first fish of the season on the Moy, has also caught another salmon of 2.7 kg. (5 lb.), Martin Conroy and Albert Bradley have caught two salmon each, all four fish around the 3.2 kg. (7 lb.) mark. Paddy Dempsey banked a lovely silver 4.5 kg. (10 lb.) spring salmon while Mark Beattie also landed a fine fish.

Up river, on the East Mayo Anglers Association Fishery, local angler, Jimmy Kilcoyne, landed the first salmon of the season from this stretch of the river.  A beautiful fresh fish of 3.2 kg. (7 lbs.), that took a spinner. Water levels on this fishery, at the time of compiling this report, are good for fly fishing.

Callow lakes

There has been some good early season trout fishing was to be had on the Callow lakes which are located just east of Foxford.  Weather conditions made angling patchy, with a mixture of bright sun and blustery winds, but when the right conditions were present, good catches of hard fighting wild brown trout to 0.5 kg. (1 lb.), were reported.  Boats can be hired from Tom Deacy at the lakes (tel. 094-9256266).

Monday 9th to Sunday 15th March 2009.

RIVER DROWES

salmonThe weather was fairly settled throughout the week and the river was at a nice for height for angling over the week. There were fair numbers of rods fishing and fair numbers of salmon caught. On Wednesday, Christy Jacob recorded a 9 lbs. salmon caught on the fly from the Island Pool. The following day, Jonathan Kerr accounted for a 10½ lbs. fish caught from Briney’s Pool on a Willie Gunn Waddington fly.  On Saturday, Brian McEvoy recorded a fine 16 lbs. salmon caught from the Old Sea Pool on a black Flying ‘C’.  On Sunday, Sean O’Neill accounted for a 9 lbs. fish caught from the Old Sea Pool on prawn. Tony Parker recorded a 6 lbs. fish caught from The Meadow on the fly.

There is a touch of spring in the air at this time of writing with warm air temperatures for the time of year. Prospects look good for the coming week with the Drowes running at good levels and settled weather forecast for the week.

For info/bookings etc on the Drowes Fishery & Lough Melvin see http://www.drowessalmonfishery.com/

LOUGH MELVIN

Despite fairly settled conditions, Melvin was fairly quiet over the week with less boats out fishing than would be expected. To date I have heard of no salmon being caught. Darren Maguire lost a good salmon on Friday after playing the fish for 15 minutes! There certainly a lot of salmon showing in the Lough at times, especially around the Garrison area.

Reports from the Finn remain positive but as water levels have now dropped to unfavourable levels for angling I recommend you try your luck on the lower stretches of the river and concentrate your efforts early morning and late evenings!

Present water levels are set to remain low over the weekend and are likely to last at least another week, so I suggest anglers check water conditions before you travel to the Finn over the next few days - contact the Loughs Agency (details below) for an up to date report or else visit our web site for a weather report and tide conditions.

County Monaghan

pikeAshley Hayden and Peadar O’Brien enjoyed a St Patrick’s Day session after Pike on an out of the way County Monaghan water. With Pike getting ready to spawn fishing can be a bit hit and miss at this time of year. So it proved, but hard work and a couple of tactical changes paid off, with half a dozen Pike coming to the net on what was an enjoyable day afloat.

Trolling and spinning various lures resulted in only one jack to the boat. After lunch a change was made to float trolling dead baits along a steep drop off. A flurry of action quickly followed with five more Pike being landed along with a couple of runs. To cap it all the sun shone, fly life appeared on the water, and summer signalled that it isn’t too far away.

SEA ANGLING

Sea Angling Update

Shore Angling

Anglers up and down the coast are experiencing mixed results, but there have been some very positive reports this week. Pin whiting, rockling and dogfish seem to be dominating at many venues. Some larger flounder have been taken from East and West Cork marks. Anglers targeting thornback ray in the Shannon Estuary are having some success with a report of 5 ray in one evening to one angler. Bass are being caught at a number of marks from Wexford to West Cork on lug and cocktails with night tides giving best results.

Boat Angling

Small boat and charter boat angling has been curtailed by the North Westerlies still hitting our shores. However Cork Harbour is providing some sport during the lulls.
