Trout on the Boyne
Trout fishing on the Boyne over the past 2 weeks has been
good with excellent hatches of BWO and sedges. Water levels were slightly
higher than normal for the time of year however week end rain has put height to
the river making conditions more difficult for the angler. Trout are preoccupied
with spent in the evening and not really committed to sedge just yet. The
reason for this is the abundance of BWO about and the trout’s preference for
sedge pupae as opposed to the adult sedge, therefore the best tactic is to
prepare for both. Daytime fishing is difficult as activity levels are reduced
and fishing fine and in small sizes (22) is required to secure success. During
the week I had good results with some very nice fish to 34 cm weighing about 1
lb. and in great condition. The remainder of the season looks very promising
provided a repeat of last years rain in July and August is not repeated.
Tributaries of the Boyne are also fishing well with nice fish to 28 cm recorded
on the Stoneyford and Enfield Blackwater.

Evening Rise on the Kells Blackwater

The Kells Blackwater is a gem of a river which at
present is fishing its socks off. Trout to over a pound are common place, and
that next sip at the end of your line could be a fish of a lifetime. Day
tickets, priced at €20.00, may be obtained by contacting local angling guide
Pat McLaughlin. Email: patandtrina@eircom.net,
Phone: +353 (0)46 9241807, Mobile: +353 (0)86 101 7415.

The Kells Blackwater in the Carnaross area, about 8
km south of Virginia, Co. Cavan has the capability of producing fish to 5 lbs.
plus. In 2004 Pat McLaughlin landed a 9 lbs. 14 oz. fish that he had stalked
for three years. Presently the stretch is producing fat, butter yellow,
beautifully spotted trout. Klink hammers and evening sedges are the top flies
with optimum fishing being from 9 pm. until dark.

FOR WEEKENDED SUNDAY 07 June 2009
RIVER BLACKWATER
The forerunners of the grilse are arriving. High tide this week should bring in the first big run of fish. We expect the first fish to be caught on the next flood. There was no salmon or sea trout reported from the other river systems in the Cork area.
Lough Currane
Vincent Appleby reports on the fishing on the LOUGH CURRANE system.
7/6/09 Mr Terence Wharton Jnr. caught 2 sea trout in the 2 to 3 lbs. class first thing this morning, now I will head for the poaching department, I was reading on the www.loughcurrane.com our manger Mr. John Murphy Esq. is reporting in the last few days that a few Grilse have been caught on the Commeragh river and Lough Currane which is great news. Wind N and veered at times NNE with the heavy showers ,amount of rainfall 4.9mm, max air temperature 13.6˚C.
6/6/09 my noble angler wasn’t very enthusiastic to pontificate and cast a fly, due to the strong NE wind blowing down the lake, mind you try and tell that to Mr. Jim Sayers who caught a fine 3 lbs. sea trout on the drift along the north shore. Wind NE and overcast with the odd heavy shower, amount of rainfall 1.7mm, max air temperature 14.0˚C.
5/6/09 Conditions first thing were quite good but come 2 pm there was bright sunshine for the rest of the afternoon and to make things worse, the wind went NE, max air temperature 18.1˚C. Amount of sunshine - 11.2 hours.
4/6/09 Again Lough Currane produced a fine 7.5 lbs. specimen sea
trout caught on the troll around the Tub Island early this morning by Dr
Reinhard Biniek of Germany, and I was reading on www.loughcurrane.com about some fine catches
and they are as follows, Mr. Collin Fraser with four sea trout his best was 4
lbs., Mr Brendan O’Halloran caught a 2,5 lbs. sea trout, Mr Ted O’Callaghan
caught six Sea trout up to 3 lbs. Wind WSW light all day with bright sunshine.
Max air temperature 19.8˚C with 11.5 hours of sun.
3/6/09 again another blazing hot day with little to no wind and what wind was between NW then veered NNE light to calm. Max air temperature 22.1˚C with 9.7 hours of blazing hot sunshine.
2/6/09 weather wise the same as yesterday except on the evening shift I Vincent Appleby of www.salmonandseatrout.com caught a grilse on the troll and took a photo of my catch which sadly I can’t show because I forgot to put the tag on the fish at the time of the photo so the least said the soonest mended. Wind SW light to calm and then veered N late this evening but it was so light it wouldn’t have blown out a candle. Max air temperature 26.1˚C and there was 15.5 hours of bright sunshine.
1/6/09 well they say the early bird catches the worm, well it’s the early angler who catches a fine sea trout of 5.5 lbs. on the fly, off the bank of Church Island at 6 am in a hired out boat from www.lakelandshouse.com so all I can say is don’t be complaining because its to bright and to hot to catch my noble game fish, simple remedy get up early or fish in the evening and give the pub a miss, and talking of the weather, today was a blazing hot day of 23.5˚C and 15.3 hours of blazing hot sunshine.
Well, that is your ration for this week, from your Gillie and
the Waterville fishery. No spin No fly’s just Facts.

UPPER SHANNON
There was a good hatch of Murrough and a good fall of spent gnat on Sheelin over the week but trout were slow enough to surface at times. The bank holiday weekend was very hot and sunny, making it unfavourable for angling. Those who ventured out reported some good fishing especially on the gnat during late evening sessions. A total of 26 trout were officially reported to the ShRFB up to weekending Sunday June 5th with weights averaging 1.5 lbs. to 2.5 lbs. Michael Kelly LSTPA had 3 trout on June 1st. Pat Delaney and Pat Bannon had a fish each of 4 lbs. George Stonehouse had a fish of 2 lbs. Prospects look promising with the mayfly season continuing for now.

LOUGH O'FLYNN & UPPER RIVER SUCK
Conditions were not conducive to good fly fishing on O'Flynn with a very cool and brisk north to northeast wind for most of the week. There were 5 to 6 anglers out most days. Anglers had to work at catching their fish. Jimmy Atton from Tuam fished with Declan Martin, also from Tuam reported 4 fish in one evening session, averaging 1.5 lbs. John Connolly from Castlerea had 7 fish over two long evening sessions. Most fish were caught on the spent gnat mayfly. A party of five French anglers fished three early mornings and had 15 trout to over 2 lbs. on wetflies. Other anglers had some fish on the Green Peter. When the wind dropped there were huge hatches of mayfly on the eastern shore and in mid lake.

LOWER SHANNON AREA
Peter Gleeson, Angling Correspondent, Nenagh Guardian 087-6564662 reports from middle and lower Lough Derg
A ROUNDUP OF THE MAYFLY SEASON ON LOUGH DERG
May 2009 saw some fine catches of large trout in Lough Derg, though many anglers had many blank days on the lake.
The catch of the season was recorded by Nenagh man Mattie Nolan on May 11th when he landed a fine fish of 9 lbs. 14 ozs. on the dapp off the Corakeen Islands off Dromineer Bay.
Garrykennedy Fishing Club member Danny Tiernan put
himself in line for the top Mayfly prize offered by the club by catching a
trout of 7 lbs 1 oz on the wulff on the shoreline just above the village of Garrykennedy on May 8.
Another fish of a lifetime, a beauty of 6 lbs. 14 ozs. was caught by Killaloe
angler Paul Conroy. This fish could have been considerably heavier but for the
fact that it was host to two lamprey eels which had debilitated the trout.
Indeed, there is colloquial evidence that the population of lamprey is growing
on the lake in recent years, with several anglers reporting increased trout
catches with this species of eel attached to them.
Bill Hickey of Clonlara had a memorable day on the spent gnat on May 9th when he landed two trout of 3 lbs. 2 ozs. and 3 lbs. 1 oz. to win the Gerry Regan Trophy competition hosted by Garrykennedy Angling Club.
In general, however, it was a poor year for spent gnat fishing as unseasonably cold and windy weather prevented gnat coming out onto the lake. However, there was an improvement very late in the season when temperatures rose. One angler who did well was Portroe’s Mal McCormack who had two lovely fish of 2 lbs. 8 ozs and 2 lbs 1 oz on one afternoon in the final week of the season while Tony Burns also had a great fish of over 3 lbs. on the gnat in Garrykennedy in the last few days.
Speaking to anglers in general, the consensus was
that 2009 will not go down as a disappointing mayfly season for most anglers.
Several anglers spent many days on the lake without catching a single fish and
there were many days when trout refused to feed on mayfly despite very healthy
hatches.
Indeed, anglers have voiced concern about the apparent lack of trout in some of
the main tributaries of the lake and whether this is having an impact on the
trout population in the lake itself and if the poor catches have anything to do
with the healthy pike and cormorant populations on the lake.
As was the case last year, those dapping the natural mayfly fared poorly
compared to those who used dry and wetfly methods. Brian Barry had a memorable
day on May 16 when he had two beauties of 4 lbs 10 ozs and 2 lbs 2 ozs on
wetfly to win the Caddy Kennedy Trophy competition hosted by Garrykennedy
Fishing Club. Brian also had a fish of 4 lbs 3 ozs on another day.
Other anglers who had trout over two pounds during the season include Sean
Dixon of Mountshannon, Padraigh O’ Brien of Portroe, Malcolm Belland Michael
Conroy, John Malone, Shane Creamer, Mike Kennedy (3 lbs. 6 ozs.) and
Garrykennedy club Chairman, Jerry O’ Brien.

UPPER SHANNON
There were big hatches of greenfly and spent gnat on Lough Sheelin over the week. Fishing was slower than of late with less fish surfacing to feed - probably gorged with fly. There were some lovely fish reported nonetheless, several fish to over 6 lbs. Owen Mc Fadden and Pat Tormey caught two trout on the Murrough sedge at 6.5 lbs. and 6 lbs. respectively. Gene Brady L.S.T.P.A. had 4 trout to 4 lbs. on the spent gnat, all released. Garry Mc Kiernan L.S.T.P.A. had 5 fish averaging 2.5 lbs., best 3.75 lbs. on spent, all released. Michael Kelly, Balbriggan caught and released 6 trout over 3 trips, best 2.5 lbs. Pat Foley caught and released a nice fish on greenfly at 6 lbs. 2 ozs. Anglers should be aware that the mayfly season normally continues on Sheelin right up to mid June and beyond. There is presently big hatches of fly on the lake.

LOUGH O'FLYNN & UPPER RIVER SUCK
There was good fishing at times on Lough O'Flynn but was hampered by the very hot conditions since the weekend. Anglers are getting most of their fish on buzzer and spent gnat. Trout were reluctant to feed on the greenfly which were quite prolific in the middle and northern part of the lake. The lake is alive with buzzer by all accounts. Declan McGoldrick from Ballyhaunis and Anthony Baggot had one short evening on the lake and had 5 fish between them. Ronan Baggott was successful with good catches on the buzzer. Bernard Mannion and Matt Foley fished with the wulff, a local pattern and had their bag limit and released other fish.
For updates contact John Ryan, Assistant Fisheries Inspector Co Roscommon at 087 2536064.
MID SHANNON AREA
Most anglers reported good showing of fish - however few returns. Jackie Kiernan had 1 fish 1.75 lbs.
26 anglers returned 77 fish heaviest 3 lbs. 12 ozs on Owel to weekending June 1st. Weather early in the week - south westerly breeze changing to sunny and bright over the weekend. Jim & Denis Rossie had 17 fish over two days heaviest 2 lbs. Johnny O'Malley had 13 fish over 2 days heaviest 3 lbs. 12 ozs - red tailed peter.

THE BARRA FLYNN MEMORIAL CUP...
The competition for the Barra Flynn Memorial Cup took place last Sunday week and as always attracted a great turnout with twenty one boats taking part. The day itself was bright with some cloud and with the wind from the south west hopes were high for a good days fishing but trout were to prove scarce on the day however late in the afternoon Ray Dowling managed to land a great trout to win the cup. The weigh in and presentation of prizes took place that evening in the Olive Bar where Keane Moran and Eamon Cummins were our excellent hosts. When the scales came down Ray Dowling topped the leader board with a fantastic 6 lbs. 1 oz 10 drms trout and won the beautiful Barra Flynn Memorial Cup. Ray was fishing that day with his sister Helen Conway and brother in law Dominic Conway and with Dominic on the net there was a few scary attempts at landing this great fish but Ray wasn’t letting him get away and Dominic eventually managed to scoop him up, he was promptly weighed and returned to the lake to give someone else a battle on another day. Second Place went to Sean Kelly for his trout which was almost two pounds lighter at 4 lbs 2 ozs and this trout was also returned to the lake while third place went to George Price for his trout which weighed in at 3 lbs. 6 ozs. 8 drms. The fourth and final spot went to Conor Hannon for his 2 lbs. 11 oz. trout. Thanks to Kate Flynn for her generous sponsorship of this competition which is now in its fifth year and to Geraldine Rohan who was our Captain of the Day.
Anglers reported excellent fishing over the past week on Lough Acalla. There has been excellent fly hatches. The most successful flies were Green Peter, Daddy Longlegs, Green and Golden Olive, Pheasant tail, Butcher, Black Pennell and Murroughs. Most anglers had no problem achieving their bag limit. 12 to 14 anglers are fishing each evening. No large fish were reported caught, fish averaged 1 lbs to 1.5 lbs. Best time to fish is late evening or very early morning during the present heatwave as daytime fishing is likely to be poor in the present weather.

KILLALOE AND BALLINA ANGLERS....
Last Sunday was the last of the May fly competitions, this was sponsored by Pat Nolan of Premier Angling. Michael Conroy came first with a 1 lb. 15 oz trout, Michael Quinlivan was second with the greatest weight, 2 lb 15 oz, and Darren Gardener was third with a trout 1 lb 4 oz.
Next Sunday’s competition is for the John Conroy Memorial trophy and is sponsored by Sadie Conroy. This is a pike fishing competition and the weight in point will be at Castle Town. Prize giving will be held in Mill’s Bar, Ballina at 7 pm.
The ShRFB has received a number of reports of Lamprey attached onto trout during the mayfly season to date. If any angler comes in contact with these we would request you would take a photo of the mouth parts of the lamprey - by the teeth we can distinguish what species they are. If possible keeping the full specimen would greatly assist us in gathering further scientific information on Lamprey in Lough Derg. Please record the date and location, where they were caught and report to HQ 061-300238 where we can arrange collection of the sample. You can also email us to info@shrfb.com Please DOWNLOAD FACT SHEET.

Galway Weir
The spring run in Galway has just about come to and end, with the first grilse starting to appear in good numbers. Tom Hughes, an Irish-American visitor, landed a nice 6 lbs. grilse on shrimp while on his trip home. John White from England had a 10 lbs. salmon on shrimp, while John Murphy, another visitor home from the States, had fish of 7 lbs., 9.5 lbs., 6 lbs. and 4 lbs. on shrimp, spinner and fly.
Roland Gleeson fished a spinner and had a grilse of 4.5 lbs, while Eugene Murphy from Dublin had a small 3 lbs. grilse on shrimp. Local angler Enda Scahill had a nice 5 lbs. grilse on shrimp, while his friend Peter Gaffney from Leitrim landed his first ever salmon, a 6-pounder, also on shrimp. Jim Kinahan from Westmeath had the best fish of the week, a lovely 10.5 lbs. salmon taken on a spinner, and Eoin Cosgrove from Tuam had a 9 lbs. fish on fly. Father and son Liam and Eoin Dunne from Offaly had 3 fish between them, with Eoin landing 2 grilse of 4.5 lbs. and 6 lbs. on shrimp and fly, but failing to beat dad Liam’s springer of 10 lbs., caught on fly. Finally Gary Kilroy from Mullingar landed a 5 lbs. grilse on shrimp, and Jim Ryan from Tipperary had a 5 lbs. fish on fly.
The more broken weather this week and lower water levels are much more conducive to flyfishing, and with grilse starting to run the river in better numbers, fishing prospects for the weeks ahead are very good.
Western Lakes
Very little to report from the western lakes this week, as the warm weather has put an end to mayfly fishing, and trout are starting to focus on perch fry. In spite of the Mediterranean conditions last week, there were still mayfly hatching on Corrib, although very few anglers were out and returns were poor. 9 anglers reported 11 trout in 23 rod-days, with the fishing described as very slow. The Kilbeg Anglers held a mixed species competition on Sunday, with Mike Foley from Galway taking first prize. In second was David Scully from Kilbeg, with Ernie Ainnis from Kilbed taking third. Tommy Greaney had the best trout landed at 0.557 kgs. Elsewhere, Frank Reilly fished one evening and landed 2 trout for approx. 3.25 lbs., while David Scott from Wales landed a nice 3.5 lbs. trout while spinning from the shore.
With the mayfly over, angler’s attention will now switch to late evening fishing with dry flies, and sedge and buzzer patterns will be the flies of choice.

Week ended 7 June, 2009
River Moy
The Moy continued to fish well this week with the arrival of fresh grilse adding to the good stock of spring salmon already in the system. Despite the bright, sunny conditions which prevailed for much of the week, a total of 172 salmon were reported bringing to season total, so far, to 1,130. Salmon were reported from most fisheries throughout the river from the Cathedral Beat, in Ballina, to the Ballintemple Fishery, just downstream of Cloongullaun Bridge. The best fish of the week, weighing 16 lbs. was taken on prawn on Armstrong’s water.
On the Ridge Pool, Klaus Friebertshauser, Germany, had a fine salmon of 11.35 lbs. on fly, while John Seery, Ballina, had two, at 3.77 lbs. and 3.84 lbs. on worm. On the Cathedral Beat, Joe Sammon, Co Cork, had a good fish of 11.5 lbs. on fly. Up river, Martin King, N. Ireland, had a salmon of 11.50 lbs., on prawn, while fishing the Foxford Salmon Anglers water at Rinnanney. On Cloongee, Mark Sweeney, Co. Louth, had a fine fish of 12.5 lbs. on worm and another, at 9 lbs., on a spinner. The East Mayo Anglers fishery produced a total of 39 salmon for the week. Roger Janneau, France, accounted for 5 for his 3 days on the fishery with 3 taken on spinner and 2 on worm and the best weighing 8 lbs. Hughie Gillespie had two on fly, one at 9 lbs. and one at 10 lbs., while Gunter Profanter, Austria, also had a 9 lbs. salmon on fly.
Moy Estuary
The estuary produced a reported catch of just 15 sea trout for the week with northerly winds making fishing conditions difficult for much of the time and discouraging anglers taking to the water.
Lough Conn & Lough Cullin
The warm, sunny weather early in the week, and northerly winds towards the weekend, resulted in reduced angling activity on Conn and Cullin this week but those who did venture out were rewarded with some good fishing. From Kelly Boat Hire, Cloghans, Peter Roche had two trout for 2 lbs. for an evening and Ray Jones, Wales, also had two trout for 2 lbs. which came to mayfly. From Pontoon Bridge Hotel, John McKernan, Belfast, had two salmon, at 6 lbs. each, and one a trout at 2 lbs. all of which were taken on a dry Wulff pattern. Fishing from Gortnorabbey, Francie White, Sligo, had thee trout on wet flies while Ian Wyse, Crossmolina, had four all of which took Mayfly patterns. At Murphy Boat Hire, Massbrook, Ecky Muller, Austria, had two trout for 3 lbs. Meanwhile, Foxford Angling Club fished their annual Presidents Cup competition on Sunday, 7 September with 25 anglers catching ten trout, mostly to dry flies. The event was won by Gary Binley with two trout at 5.86 lbs. (2.66 kg) Stephen Browne was 2nd. with 3 trout weighing 4.76 lbs. (2.16 kg) while John O’Connell was 3rd. with three trout at 3.43 lbs. (1.56 kg).
Carrowmore Lake and Owenmore River
The bright, sunny weather this week had a particularly negative effect on this shallow lake and only one salmon, at 8 lbs., was reported. No fish were reported from the river due to low water conditions.
Lough Beltra & Newport River
No fish were reported from this system this week.
Ballin Lough
Unsuitable conditions also resulted in reduced activity on Ballin Lough this week. However, the lake produced 38 rainbow trout of which 17 were returned to the water. Six rods from Rosmuc Fishing Club caught 22 trout for their day of which they returned 10 to the water. Best flies for the week were Minkies and various Deer Hair patterns. For booking and boat hire, contact Mrs. Gill at the lake (098-26128).
Ballisodare River
The Ballisodare Fishery continued to fish well this week with a total of 25 salmon reported of which 14 were released. The catch of the week fell to Gerry McHugh who banked a fine salmon of 14.5 lbs. which he caught on an Ally’s Shrimp fly. John Walsh had a 10 lbs. salmon on worm and Trevor Goulding had one of 8 lbs. Some grilse have also started to appear in Ballisodare with a number of fish in the 4 lbs. to 5 lbs. bracket being caught this week.
River Bonet
The Bonet provided some lively fishing this week with two French visitors to Dromahair who fished the Dromahair Cottages beat upstream of the town. Jean Michael Zapata landed a 9 lbs. salmon on a Blue fox mepps spinner and Jean Marie Borreca landed an 8 lbs. fish which took a similar lure.
Lough Arrow
Fishing on Lough Arrow quietened down this week as the main mayfly season tapered off but some good catches were still recorded. John Hargadan had four fine trout over a few days of which two weighed 2 lbs. each, one tipped the scales at 3 lbs. 13 ozs. and his fourth weighed in at 4 lbs. 2 ozs. Michael Gunning had two trout at 2 lbs. and 3.5 lbs. while Peter Dunne had two at 2 lbs and 3.5 lbs. Ken Murray had three trout of which he returned two and retained one at 2 lbs. Most of the trout were caught on dry flies with Murroughs and Spent Gnat working well. It is most encouraging to see Arrow producing such quality fish again after a number of years of disappointing fishing. It is also good to see that many anglers are assisting conservation of stocks on Arrow by releasing some or all of their catch.

Cashel Trout Fishery report by Marlene Mc Laughlin
With the temperature dropping slightly at the weekend anglers were finding it easier to hook a few trout on the surface using dries. The Thatch Angling Group held a competition with us at the weekend with fifteen anglers taking part with the youngest of them being 13 year old Gary Elder from Limavady. The winners were 1st Zarrin Martin with four trout to the bank on a black gladiator, one of which weighed around 5 lbs. 2nd was Sean Donnelly (Limavady) with three trout to the bank falling to a black lure also. A total of sixteen trout were banked not to mention the numerous ones that got away. Cashel Trout Fishery donated the prizes to Thatch angling club.
Dungiven’s Mark Boyce released four trout which took dries and muddlers while father and son Willie and Liam McElhinney (Magilligan) released seven in total with young Liam releasing two of 8 lbs. and 3 lbs. which fell to daddies. Feeny’s Franky Murphy had a great day banking four in total but only taking two home which weighed 5 lbs. 4 ozs. Franky used the suspender buzzer and daddies. Husband and wife team Chris and Nora Martin (Magherafelt) banked a couple and lost a couple which took the daddies too. Malachy Moore and Niall Murray (Limavady) banked one and three respectively using a green lure. Kieran Mc Garrigle and Adrian Guy (Limavady) bagged three for home which weighed a total of 13 lbs. 6 ozs. Falling to a viva. Dungiven’s John Hasson and Martin Bradley released three each on Saturday evening. These anglers were using the f-fly and the suspender buzzer. Shaune Duggan (Gulladuff) banked four in total taking two home which weighed 5 lbs. 8 ozs. while Antrim’s Michael Edwards did very well using a dawson’s olive and a pheasant tail nymph. He banked seven altogether taking three home which weighed 7 lbs. 9 ozs. Draperstown’s Greg English bagged one trout which took an egg fly. It weighed 2 lbs. 12 ozs. Last but by no means least, Visocki Sergei (Russia) bagged two for home which weighed 6lb and fell to an olive nymph.
River Licences are now on sale at Cashel Trout Fishery. We also now stock a splendid variety of fly and spinning tackle at Cashel Fishing Lodge.
We are now taking group bookings for any angling club or corporate groups interested in a fun day. Catering facilities are available in the adjacent Cashel Fishing Lodge.

A Festival of Coarse Angling in the East Midlands

John Whittingham from Crewe in England shows the quality of fish available in the Grand Canal in Edenderry, Co. Offaly. A regular
visitor to Ireland over the last 15 years, John was a contestant in the
Edenderry Coarse Angling Festival, held over three days between Monday 1st
and Friday 5th June. Running side by side with the Prosperous, Co.
Kildare, and Enfield, Co. Meath festivals, the three events attracted 60
anglers from various parts of the United Kingdom. Many, including Graham
Johnson from Preston and Martin Lenihan from Warrington, have been fishing in Ireland for many years and will continue to do so.

Derek Hurst, a first time visitor to Ireland, was very happy with the Tench that he caught on the Killeens stretch of the Grand Canal, during the last day of the Edenderry event, while Mullingar based Pascal
Weymes fished gamely through the oppressive heat at Toberdaly during Wednesdays
match.

Mediterranean style weather created tough fishing
conditions throughout the week, but this did not deter the competitors, and a
worthy winner eventually emerged with Jason Ward (an Englishman resident in
Ireland) topping the event with a combined weight of 32 lbs. 13 oz. Jason also
featured in the three man team event with his team coming first with a combined
weight of 53 lbs. 11 oz.

Great credit must go to the Edenderry Coarse
Angling Club, in particular Chairman Pauric Kelly for his tireless work and
enthusiasm in making the festival the professional but fun event that it is
today. For information on future events and general fishing updates along the
canal check out the Edenderry Coarse Angling Club website at:

UPPER SHANNON
A coarse angling report came in by E-mail from the
website www.activeirishangling.com
on the recent holiday story of two anglers who booked a holiday in Ireland online which also included a photo.
“This is 68 year old Brian Morgan on holiday who had over 30 lbs. of fish on the northern shores of Lough Allen. Brian – who lives in Sandbach, Cheshire – has been coming to Ireland for 30 years and says the fishing is Ireland is as good as ever.
“Pre-baiting is more important than ever because there are fewer anglers about – my son and I had a lake to ourselves every day of the week”, he said.
REPORT FROM LOUGH ALLEN
fishing cousins Derek and Damien McCabe had their best
ever days fishing at Wynne’s Shore on Lough Allen after a maddening false start
to the morning.
They had spent time preparing swims and pre-baiting another local lake in County Leitrim but when they arrived at the ‘crack of dawn’ (8am!) anglers were already
fishing the swim. They headed off to Wynne’s Shore on the massive Lough Allen,
near to their Drumshanbo homes, where the found a shoal of Bream in position
and eager to feed.
It is a shallow bay and both anglers used a crystal waggler just two
rod lengths out with 5 lbs. main line, 4 lbs. hook lengths and worm on a size
12’s hook.
Despite blistering hot sunshine and flat calm conditions they set about
catching Bream up to 4 lbs. Derek’s catch weighed 60 lbs. but Damien got the
edge with a total of 80 lbs.
Lough Allen, which is eight miles long and three wide, is the first lake on the River Shannon system and renowned for its year-round fishing for Bream, hybrids, Roach and very big pike.

Brian Bohan CHAFLYNNS COTTAGE & GUIDING SERVICE MOHILL reports on angling in the upper Shannon region around MOHILL and CARRICK ON SHANNON
Water levels are low at the moment with most lakes fishable in the Upper Shannon region.
"Ian was having a difficult week so we heavily pre-baited a swim for 2 nights and with an early morning start 4 am we headed off with an eagerness to catch a decent net of fish. When we arrived the swim was alive, the river was heaving with fish. Ian's face lit up when he saw the amount of action on the water. Well soaked wheat was Ian's preferred bait for the day and I stuck to worm. The action was hectic all morning and by noon our nets were well full. Ian weighted in 104 lbs. and I weighted 160 lbs."

As reported last week guests of Melview lodge Gary and Colin from the UK, with Kevin's catch pictured here brought their total to over 300 lbs. in two days. It was great to see the change in the weather as the fish started to feed hard and good weights were achieved in most places. There is a report coming in of a 7 lbs. specimen Tench and a 100 lbs. + catch of Bream so tune in next week to catch up with what's been going on. Water levels are back down to normal making places more accessible, and pre-baiting the night before seems to help.
Special note:- If you intend to keep fish in keep nets for pictures
please ensure they are pegged / set out correctly and you use more than one if
you have a good catch so not to cause damage or stress to fish, and no fish
should be left in nets over night to be pictured with fish the next day this is
sure to cause harm to the fish.

The Rudd Bream came from Lough Ree during a long and gruelling session. It is a fine fish and at 5 lbs. 8 oz. It is a big weight for a species that was once a common sight but is fast disappearing.

As predicted the fishing has picked up, however the bright sun during the day seems to slow things down. Early mornings and fishing late into the evenings has produced some great Bream fishing. Pre-baiting the correct amount for the size of the venue and stock of fish is important. More swims are to be pre-baited between now and Saturday.
Colin and Gary from the UK were over once again for their annual fishing stay with Kevin and Jane Lyons at Melview Lodge in Longford, We reported last week that they were pre-baiting and preparing swims, well it paid off for them. The first session produced a joint weight of over 115 lbs. of Bream and more pre-baiting produced 87 lbs. almost all Bream. They had some cracking fish to nearly 6 lbs. They fished very late into the evening and early morning to avoid the bright sun during the day.

PIKE ANGLING REPORT RECEIVED FROM RICHIE DUNNE
I have been exploring a lot of small to medium sized lakes around Longford and Cavan recently. I landed this beauty on a water well off the beaten track about 5 miles outside Roosky. Green weed and hungry crabs are making fishing
difficult. The crabs are so active at times it is necessary to rebait every few
minutes! However perseverance has paid off for some anglers with Thornback Ray,
Dogfish and Bull Huss turning up for anglers using mackerel or sandeel.
Bridges of Ross
Mackerel fishing has improved considerably. However anglers are having to contend with a seal which is robbing the mackerel from the feather traces as they are being retrieved! Some wrasse are being caught on Crab or Limpet. Conger are being caught from the flat rock below the Car Park. Pollock are turning up in the rock gullies south of the Car Park to anglers spinning Dexter Wedges, Plugs and Jelly Worms.

Mackerel still patchy at times. Good Pollock close in under the cliff. Some nice Wrasse turning up mackerel strip.

Tope are in and can be caught on all the usual
marks: This week has been reasonably okay
weather wise, but after our scorching spell its hard to get used to the rain,
despite this the fishing has been good. I have been to sea with mixed parties,
and its nice to see local lads get the best of the Fishing. Tope are in and can
be caught on all the usual marks, on Mackerel flapper, and fillets, Bull huss
are present too on all the Tope marks. The Mackerel again have dropped off a
bit but its probably due to the east winds. When the winds are from the east
the Fish bite the least, when its in the West the fishing's best.
