The Fourth annual Larry Myler Memorial took place here at Rathbeggan on Sunday 5th October. A field of 20 anglers took part and fishing was very productive. Overall 89 fish were caught and measured before being carefully released. 1st Place went to Bective Anglers Tommy Byrne from Dunshaughlin with 12 fish. 2nd was Clondalkin man Roger Fowler with 11. Stephen O Flaherty took third with 9 and fourth place went to Dudley Renyard from Swords with 8
Weather started dry with light breeze but when the first showers came the activity really got going. Weighted nymphs scored the best with buzzers also lifting a lot of fish.

Mick Flanagan Angling Correspondent for the Westmeath Topic and Sunday World Newspaper Tel: 087 2797270: mick@midlandangling.com reports on Midland Lakes and Rivers.
THE END IS NEAR
Some of our local lakes have closed since last Tuesday 30th Sept for game fishing. The remainder which is under the control of the Shannon Fisheries will close next Sunday 12th Oct. Lough Lene finished on a high note last week. The lake produced some good brown & Rainbow Trout. Sinclair Walker from Castlepollard had two lovely trout. The one on the left is one of the first photos of a Lough Lene Rainbow Trout, and on the right is a Brown Trout. The next big day for Lough Lene is the Christmas Pike Competition 2nd November, sponsored by G.B.B, more on this as it draws nearer.
TROUT BURSTING WITH FRY
Now that most of the lakes in the West of Ireland are closed to game fishing, a lot of trout fishing will be in the Shannon Region. Lakes such as Sheelin, Ennell, Derravaragh, & Owel will not close till Sunday 12th Oct. So far this season these lakes never really got going, but that all changed last week on Lough Owel. The Trout went bananas on fry. Approx 125 anglers fished the Leinster Qualifier last Saturday week, and 70 anglers caught fish. Pat Sweeney Broadmeadow A.C. was top Leinster rod with 6 fish weighing 8lbs 7oz, 2nd Mick Mc McCormack Brosna A.C. 4 fish weighing 7lbs 14oz, and 3rd was Martin McGorian Kilbride A.C. With 5 fish weighing 6lbs 5oz.
LAKELAND ANGLERS
Fished their end of season trout competition last Sunday 5th Oct, you had a choice of Three lakes, Ennell, Owel, or Derravaragh, with weigh in Caffreys bar and lounge at 8pm.The lakes fished well. Colin Folan reports:
Salmon fishing improved greatly in the last two weeks of September, but sport was confined to Lough Inagh, as there was not enough water in the river beats.
Murt Folan, Galway caught a nice fresh eight pound fish, and released a twelve pounder, both fish fell for Murt’s own tied fly "father ronan". Alan & Margaret Oxley, Isle of man fished six days on Inagh and had a salmon each, both fish took a daddy. Margaret had the larger fish weighing five pounds. Paddy Byrne Newbridge caught a tagged fish of six pounds. Kieran Power Galway released a fish of seven pounds caught on a telephone fly. Ciaran Wilson, Galway released a fish of five pounds, the fish took a daddy. The Sea Trout fishing was average for September, with some larger fish caught.
Kyle Kirwan USA, fished corloo beat in high water and had great sport, his half-day catch included fourteen Sea Trout and two brown trout. Most fish took a ballcock fly. The best fish was about two and a half pounds. Mike Heenan, Galway had a good day on Inagh reporting six browns and five Seatrout. Best flies were the rebel and claret dabbler. Alan and Margaret Oxley Isle of Man, fished six days on Inagh and reported nine Seatrout to three pounds. They also had great sport with the resident browns also catching six, but Alan had the fish of a lifetime when he caught and released an eight pound brown on a minky fished on a hi-d.
Sunday September 28th saw the annual catch & release competition on Lough Inagh.
First place: Vincent Foley, Dublin with a five pound Salmon and one Seatrout.
Second place: Michael Heery, Dublin with three Seatrout and two Brown
Trout.
Third place: Neil Gilchrist, Scotland with three Seatrout and one brown.
Overall 2003 was a good year for Salmon, with 39 fish taken compared to 51 in 2002, but taking into account the dry spell during August and September and the downturn in rod effort (40%), I am reasonably happy. The Seatrout on the other hand were disappointing, with only 265 for the season, all of which were returned.
Salmon: 39 best fish 13lbs.
Sea Trout: 265 best fish 3lbs.
Brown Trout: 233 best fish 8lbs.
Rod days: 504
Overall 2003 was a good year for salmon, with 39 fish taken, compared to 51 in 2002, but taking into account the dry spell during August and September, and the downturn in rod effort at 40%, I am reasonably happy. 17 fish were taken from the Derryclare Butts, 16 from Inagh Lake and the remainder from the other beats. Three tagged fish were caught, all from Lough Inagh average weight was six pounds. Four fish weighed over ten pounds. During September, nine Salmon were caught and seven of these were returned. 35,000 Salmon fry were released this April into the system, and next year we plan to release more.
The Sea Trout on the other hand was disappointing with 265 fish recorded compared to 255 in 2002. The reason I am disappointed is that the average size was very small (too small to spawn). A lot of net-marked fish were caught and this happened at sea as Ballynahinch experienced similar. I can only deduce mackerel nets were more active than usual.
Thankfully we had superb Brown Trout fishing on Inagh this year. Two fish, of six and eight pounds were caught and released by their happy captors. In all, 233 fish were reported.
John Burke reports:
info@nwrfb.com
Few anglers were out during the week and again the same as last week those that went out enjoyed good sport and were delighted with the amount of small fish showing. Heaviest fish weighing 3.16lbs. was caught by John Burke Toomore Foxford. Eamon Nelligan and friend from Cork had 12 trout for one day average weight 1lb. and all fish released. Michael Monaghan Knockmore had 5 trout for one day best fish 2lbs. all fish released. Tom and Malcolm Bell Limerick had 7 fish over two days on the dap. Mick Sweeney Dublin had 3 fish for one day. Castlebar Anglers held their annual end of season competition for the Jackson and Prendergast Cups on Sunday. 57 anglers caught 35 fish. Winner of Jackson Cup for heaviest fish was John Burke with a fish weighing 3.16lbs. Second with best bag for the Prendergast Cup was Joe Quinn Ballina with 5 fish weighing 5.87lbs. Third John Walsh Cloghans with 3 fish weighing 3,39lbs.
This fishery was stocked on Friday last with fish averaging 1.5lbs. and is fishing well at the moment. It is open until October 31st and boats can be hired from Mrs Gill Tel. 098-26128.

John Todd, Loughs Agency Angling Manager reports:
declan@loughs-agency.org
The Sion Mills stretch of the river Mourne and the beats upstream had been producing the odd fish up until the rain came on Sunday. One of the best of these weighed in at 13lbs. It came from the Giant’s Grave and was taken by Raymond Kelly using a bubble float and Munroe Killer fly on the 30th September. On the same day Victor Wallace had one of 5lbs on a tube fly in Paddy’s Stream and Bobby Wallace took one of 6lbs from the Liskey Streams on a black Flying C. A green Flying C did the trick for Dessie Patton on the 1st and 2nd October when he had fish of 8 and 7lbs respectively from the Wood Hole. Other successful anglers included Frank Donaghue, Billy Wallace and Wesley Beattie who all used versions of the Flying C to take fish from 3 to 6lbs at the Wood Hole, Black Rock and Camus.
The change in weather and imminent arrival of rain resulted in the fish coming on the take between the bridges in Strabane on Sunday with reports of between 20 and 30 salmon taken from this stretch and below the new by-pass bridge. One angler hooked six landed four and returned two on the fly during this period.
The river was rising and dirty on Monday but at the time of writing (Tuesday 7th Oct.) it is coming into good shape and there may be some good fishing to come.
The Derg was also reported to be looking in good order as of this morning although there has not been much angling effort in the last few weeks.
The Owenkillew was also reported to have risen and while it might have been a little high and not clean at Gortin this morning it too could produce a good end to the season.
There have been a few smallish fish, around the 4lb. mark, taken in the tidal section over the past couple of days and with water fining down today prospects for the next day or two are encouraging.
Last Friday Cahill McGuigan had a lovely fish of 16lbs 4ozs. at Moody’s on the fly and anglers can only hope there are a few more of these around.
There are reports of good numbers of fish in the tidal section and up to Lynch’s. With the recent water it is hoped that these fish will now move upstream.

FISHERIES & ANGLING HIGHLIGHTS
AUTUMNAL WEATHER LIVENS UP PIKE FISHING AGAIN THIS WEEK
Weather is much cooler now as we move into October. Fluctuating temperatures and strong cool northerly winds of late did upset coarse fishing a little Feedback has been very limited this week at some centres as the season advances but still some good fishing was reported and pike were very definitely in active mood over the week in many parts of the region. This is good news for pikers and prospects look promising again for the coming week. TIGHT LINES!
UPPER SHANNON
ShRFB reports for the Upper Shannon region

Fishing was good on the River Suck and the River Shannon in the Shannonbridge area. A party of anglers from Malton and Yorks fished the River Suck and the Shannon around Shannonbridge over the later days of September and into the first few days of October. Peter Warnick and Martin Gling, Malton had good fishing with bites all day and some nice sized fish on the Shannon and River Suck on September 28th. October 1st saw further good catches for Martin with a bag of Bream and Roach for 40lbs on the River Suck. Peter had a good bag of 38.5lbs with bream to 5lbs fishing deep at the mouth of the River Suck at Shannonbridge. Martin described his last day as great when he netted 43lbs of roach and bream on the River Suck. Peters last day also produced the goods with a super bream catch of 70lbs at the mouth of the River Suck at Shannonbridge on October 3rd. Bob Newton from Malton had a super catch of mostly Rudd on the Shannon opposite Clonfert entrance on Tuesday October 2nd, he totalled 42lbs and 51lbs with rudd to 1lb. Andrew Chaters Malton fished the Shannon downstream of Shannonbridge by boat and had large roach and rudd in a mixed bag on October 3rd.

EXTRACTS RECENT ARTICLES ON THE CLARE LAKES
SUN NEWSPAPER ARTICLE DATED JULY 25TH
Last week I spent my evenings on one of my favourite lakes, Ballycullinan just outside the village of Corofin in Co Clare and my reward for braving the torrential rain showers was this beautiful bronze bream in the photo.
It weighed in at just an ounce short of 8lb and was the heaviest of a number of belting bream that fell to my sweetcorn bait during the 5 evenings afloat.
The secret to successful bream fishing is to feed heavily in a certain area each evening. The shoals of fish will eventually find this feed and after a day or so will include this area in their feeding route. And it doesn’t matter what you feed them as long as it is edible and there is plenty of it.
I used sacks of flaked maize, available at Creamery outlets countrywide and it is so much cheaper than commercial purpose made groundbait especially in the large quantities required.
Two or three tins of sweetcorn, my proposed hook bait, were added to the nightly offering and all this was mixed up with a bag of my favourite additive, Sensas ‘Strawberry Fizz’ to add some flavour and colour. A shoal of bream will hoover up a mountain of grub in no time and of course the resident rudd, hybrids and tench will also tuck in to the freebies at party time.
Whilst small bream, known as skimmers are easy to catch, the bigger bream, those over seven pounds, are a mysterious and exciting fish. They tend to be nocturnal feeders and those at Ballycullinan are no exception, the best of the action starting at 10 in the evening just the time when a ‘starlight’ tube must be fitted on the float as darkness falls.
As expected, the first three evenings were quiet save for the attention of the rudd that abound in this lake and which are also reaching a handy size. But it was the bream I was after and on the fourth night, just as darkness closed in a black back showed on the surface at my baited area. They had arrived.
The illuminated float was soon dipping and rising in short twitches, indicating the feeding activity nine feet below, before finally disappearing altogether and the first bream, at 6lb 12oz was hooked. My tackle was more than a match for these super fish as my now favourite rod, a Total Fishing Gear ‘Iron and Velvet’ float rod coupled with six pound line is tailor made to cope with fish such as this, and bigger.
And that rod was soon in full action curve again with three more bream, all of a similar poundage completing that evenings session.
Confidence was high the next evening, despite the torrential rain and I expected to catch at least one good-sized bream in the hot period between 10pm and 1am. And soon after 10pm the first bream of a lively session was being played to the landing net, a perfect and superbly conditioned fish at just one ounce less than the specimen weight of 7lb 8oz. Close but no cigar.
Just a few minutes had passed when the float sank again and this time I reached my target set for the week as the star of the show at 7lb 15oz fell to my double sweetcorn bait on a size 10 hook. A further seven pounder, at 7lb 2oz completed a great evenings sport. Mission accomplished, or are there much bigger ones?
Corofin is rightly reputed as ‘An Angler’s Paradise’ with numerous lakes in the locality that rarely see an angler. Boats are available for hire from Mike Cleary at the B and B ‘Lakefield Lodge’, and from Burke’s Shop in the Main Street who also have fishing tackle. Friendly Pub’s along with a variety of restaurants make Corofin the perfect angler’s holiday venue. In fact it is paradise.

reports on a recent trip to Cloonahee Lake in the Strokestown lake district
On 24th of September my brother in law and d I caught 6 pike (biggest 64 cm.) The day after 7, next 8 (biggest 80 cm). And the last day of our stay we caught 19 pike, 6 of them around the 60 cm. Most of them in the creeks to and from the Lough (14). Most of them with a spinner. Thanks to the golden tip of Malcolm of the tackle shop near the bridge in Carrick on Shannon.

Limited angling feedback this week. Anglers coarse fishing in the Meelick area of the River Shannon reported a lot of pike activity though, snatch takes and lost fish. One group decided to go pike fishing instead of the intended coarse fishing and landed several fish from 8lbs to 16lbs. About half a mile downstream of Meelick match stretch a huge shoal of fish were located on fishfinder. Access only by boat. Pike fishing is very good and worth trying this week.
