Introduction
There are three lamprey species found in Irish waters: brook, river and sea lampreys. The European Union Habitats Directive legally protects each of these species in designated Special Areas of Conservation (SAC’s). This directive requires the monitoring and protection of lamprey species coupled with the conservation and maintenance of their preferred habitat.
The Central Fisheries Board, in a project sponsored by the Office of Public Works (OPW), has been engaged in monitoring and managing lamprey populations in the Kilkenny Flood Relief Scheme (FRS) in the South East of Ireland. Research in this area has led to the development of a quantitative method for sampling lamprey ammocoetes in soft sediments and has yielded high quality ecological and conservation data.
