SEA ANGLERS – HAVE YOU SEEN THIS FISH?

GILTHEAD BREAM (Sparus aurata L.) IN IRELAND
In recent years occasional specimens of gilthead bream have been recorded off the south coast of Ireland, mainly by anglers. This species is an excellent sport angling species which is common in the Mediterranean. Its distribution also extends to northern France and the south coast of England.
Preliminary observations suggest that gilthead bream are beginning to colonise the Irish coastline. It is important to document the extent of their distribution and to monitor their progress. The Marine Sports Fish Section of the Central Fisheries Board has embarked on a programme to study gilthead bream and anglers can help by recording any captures of the fish.
