3.1 Shad investigations
3.1.3 Sampling at ESB Campile
Survey work was undertaken here courtesy of ESB management at Campile. Water intake from Waterford Harbour is passed through a set of four band screens acting in parallel. These serve to filter out small debris as well as biological ‘debris’ such as mussels, crabs, jellyfish and fish. The biological debris is carried up along the sides of the screens from sump areas and is washed off the screens into outflow channels.
On each visit, fine-mesh nets were placed under the outflow flumes and trapped any fish washed through the system. Sampling was done on four occasions in the June-October period. On each visit sampling was done for set periods of hours to encompass high- and low tide conditions.
The range of fish species encountered was small, as were actual numbers of fish encountered. The principal items were juvenile sprat/herring, flounder and smelt (Table 3). No juvenile shad were taken. Samples on all occasions were dominated by crabs, mussel shells and jellyfish (Fig. 2). A small number of squid were also encountered in the samples.
