Definition:
The Employment Equality Act, 1998, specifically prohibits discrimination based on: gender, marital status, family status, sexual orientation, religious belief, age, (between 18 and 65), disability, race, membership of the traveller community.
Grounds for discrimination are: in access to employment, in conditions of employment, in provision of training, experience, in promotion or re-grading, in classification of posts.
Discrimination can be direct or indirect: e.g.
Direct discrimination: when a person is treated less favourably than another person would be treated in the same circumstances.
Indirect discrimination: when a person is obliged to comply with a condition of employment, with which a substantially greater proportion of one group than another group can comply and when a requirement that is the same for everyone has an unfair effect on some people because of their gender, marital status, family status, sexual orientation, religious belief, age, (between 18 and 65), disability, race, membership of the traveller community.
Policy Statement:
The Central and Regional Fisheries Boards are committed to the provision of Equal Opportunities for all employees and will be guided only by the individual’s ability to do the job.
The objectives of this policy are to create a work environment free from all discrimination, by dealing effectively with any complaints of such conduct and also by welcoming diversity and promoting employment equality.
Scope:
This policy applies to all employee categories within the Central and Regional Fisheries Boards.
Review of Policy: This policy will be reviewed regularly and in any case no later than three yearly intervals and updated as appropriate to enhance equality of opportunity and to ensure compliance with legislation and with Fisheries Boards’ Policies and Procedures. Achievements of its objectives will require the active commitment of all employees.
