Inland Fisheries Bill 2009

19/11/09: The Minister for Natural Resources, Mr. Conor Lenihan T.D., today published the Inland Fisheries Bill 2009. Following on from the Government’s approval of proposals for the restructuring of the inland fisheries sector this Bill sets out the statutory basis for the establishment of Inland Fisheries Ireland.

Consultation process - Wild Salmon and Sea Trout Tagging Scheme Regulations for the 2010 Season

13/11/09: The Minister of State at the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Mr. Conor Lenihan T.D., has given statutory notice of his proposal to revise the regulations for the Wild Salmon and Sea Trout Tagging Scheme Regulations [.doc, 410 KB] for the 2010 season. Licensing of Fishing Rights by Tender

05/11/09: The Central Fisheries Board intends offering for licence fishing rights for the 2010 season attaching to a number of fisheries located throughout the state and this tender process is now open.

Unauthorised deliberate release of Genetically Modified (GM) fish in Ireland.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is the Competent Authority implementing the Genetically Modified Organisms (Deliberate Release) Regulations 2003, (S. I. No. 500 of 2003) which transposes EU Directive 2001/18/EC (repealing Directive 90/220/EEC on the deliberate release of GMOs into the environment). Stop the spread of Non-native invasives

Non-native invasives are species that have been introduced, generally by human intervention, outside their natural range and whose establishment and spread can threaten native ecosystems. The number of non-native freshwater species recorded in Irish watercourses increased significantly in the 20th century.

Anglers and Fishermen - we need your help!! The Celtic Sea Trout Programme

“We need Anglers to send in scales from each sea trout caught in the sea or any river between Strangford Lough in Northern Ireland to Timoleague, West Cork in the South” Dr Paddy Gargan Project Manager.

Shad in inshore and estuarine waters – we need your help!

The two species of shad – twaite (Alosa fallax) and allis (A. alosa) are among the rarest species of fish breeding in Irish freshwaters. These fish are members of the herring family but are much larger and more deep-bodied than the usual herring. We continue to need your help to increase our current knowledge base. Where possible the bodies provide important information on size, age, maturity and spawning history for us and we would welcome an opportunity to examine them.

GILTHEAD BREAM (Sparus aurata L.) IN IRELAND

In recent years occasional specimens of gilthead bream have been recorded off the south coast of Ireland, mainly by anglers. This species is an excellent sport angling species which is common in the Mediterranean. Its distribution also extends to northern France and the south coast of England.

Land-locked sea lamprey

We need your help! The lamprey species are an elongate, eel-like fish but have no true jaws. Instead they have a sucker-like mouth that they use to attach to host fish. The sea and river lamprey normally live at sea as adults, attaching themselves to a wide range of host species. However, a limited number of non-migratory sea lampreys were positively identified from Irish lakes in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s.These samples were provided by anglers – with a number of valuable results coming from Lough Conn.
